Case Study: Composite Cooling Solutions Cooling Towers
Project: University of Miami
Medical Staff Parking Garage and Central Plant
Miami, Florida
2006
Engineer: Newcomb & Boyd
Atlanta, GA
Contractor: John J. Kirlin
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

The first phase of this project consisted of 3 cells totaling 11,700 tons. One of the project challenges was meeting the 180 mph hurricane force wind loads that may be present South Florida. Composite Cooling Solutions was able to demonstrate that their 32 oz., double wall casing could withstand the harsh environment. Each cell is 36’ x 48’ x 42’ H. The towers feature FRP basins, 200 hp inverter duty fan motors and double reduction gear drives. Access to the fan deck is provided via non-corrosive FRP ladders with FRP safety cages and FRP handrails.

Although not a requirement for this project, Composite Cooling Solutions is one of the few field-erected cooling tower manufacturers who have obtained FM Approval for their multi-cell towers; permitting installation without the added expense of fire protection sprinklers.
